Emergency Management

Leadership & Coordination

The Town of Hanson Emergency Management Division is responsible for preparing for, responding to, and recovering from major disasters and large-scale emergencies.

Led by Fire Chief Robert O’Brien, who serves as the Emergency Management Director, this division acts as the central coordinating point for town resources during critical events such as severe storms, blizzards, hurricanes, and widespread power outages.

Our Mission

We work year-round to ensure the town is ready for any crisis. Our primary responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Planning: Developing and maintaining the town’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) and Continuity of Operations strategies.
  • Agency Coordination: Serving as the liaison between the Town of Hanson and state/federal agencies, including the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and FEMA.
  • Resource Deployment: Organizing the opening of emergency shelters and cooling/warming centers when environmental conditions become dangerous.

Reverse911 Emergency Notifications

Communication is your best defense in an emergency.

The Town of Hanson utilizes a reverse 911 system to deliver critical information directly to residents.

This system allows public safety officials to send time-sensitive alerts via phone calls, text messages, and emails regarding:

  • Severe weather warnings
  • Evacuation notices
  • Missing person alerts
  • Major road closures or utility outages

Personal Preparedness

While we stand ready to respond, community safety begins at home. We encourage all residents to maintain a basic emergency kit that includes:

  • Non-perishable food and water (for at least 72 hours)
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • A battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • First aid supplies and necessary medications
  • Copies of important documents
