The Whitman-Hanson Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a regional volunteer organization dedicated to improving the safety and resilience of our communities. Comprised of residents from both Whitman and Hanson, our team serves as a vital “force multiplier” for professional public safety agencies during major disasters and community events.

Our Mission

When large-scale emergencies occur—such as blizzards, hurricanes, or extended power outages—police and fire departments can be stretched to their limits. The mission of the Whitman-Hanson CERT is to step in and provide critical auxiliary support, allowing professional first responders to focus on the most immediate life-threatening situations.

Our volunteers are trained to perform a wide variety of tasks to support the Town of Hanson and the Town of Whitman:

Hanson Fire Trucks

What We Do

  • Emergency Shelter Operations: staffing regional shelters during severe weather, including registering residents, setting up cots, and managing supplies.
  • Warming & Cooling Centers: Operating local centers during extreme temperature events to protect vulnerable populations.
  • Rehab & Support: Providing hydration, food, and logistical support to firefighters during prolonged incidents or large-scale fires.
  • Traffic & Crowd Management: Assisting with public safety at large community gatherings, parades, and road races.
  • Search Assistance: Aiding law enforcement in non-tactical missing person searches (e.g., perimeter support or line searches)

Training & Preparation

You do not need prior emergency experience to join. We provide all necessary training to ensure you are safe and effective in the field. Volunteers complete a federally recognized curriculum that covers:

  • Disaster Medical Operations (Triage & First Aid)
  • Light Search and Rescue
  • Fire Safety & Utility Control
  • Disaster Psychology & Team Organization

  • Who can join: Residents 18+ (Background check required).
  • Commitment: We hold regular training meetings and are activated on an as-needed basis for emergencies and planned events.
